Overview

DecisionPoint seeks a Backup and Recovery Engineer to manage enterprise-wide backup, restore, and replication operations supporting a large federal and DoD-aligned IT environment. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining reliable backup architectures that protect mission-critical systems across cloud and on-premises platforms. 

The Backup and Recovery Engineer oversees backup scheduling, retention policies, encryption settings, replication jobs, restoration testing, and backup infrastructure health. The role supports resilience, compliance, and continuity requirements while coordinating closely with cloud, database, network, and security teams. 

This position is fully remote.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Backup and Recovery Engineer will: 

  • Own the enterprise backup and restore strategy across cloud-hosted and on-premises environments. 
  • Configure and maintain backup policies, retention schedules, encryption settings, and replication jobs. 
  • Ensure backup reliability through monitoring, verification, and routine restore testing. 
  • Troubleshoot backup failures, replication issues, and storage configuration problems. 
  • Coordinate with database administrators on backup consistency, log shipping, and restore validation. 
  • Collaborate with cloud engineering teams on snapshot policies, cross-region replication, and backup automation. 
  • Implement encryption, key management, and secure backup handling according to DoD security requirements. 
  • Support Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO) compliance. 
  • Maintain documentation, including backup topology diagrams, runbooks, schedules, and test plans. 
  • Provide reporting on backup success rates, storage utilization, replication health, and operational risks. 
  • Support disaster recovery efforts, failover planning, and post-incident data restoration. 
  • Participate in audits, compliance reviews, and RMF evidence collection related to backup and recovery. 

Qualifications

Clearance Requirement 

Must hold an active Top Secret clearance, supported by a Tier 5 background investigation. 

 

Education (Required) 

Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Cloud Computing, Systems Engineering, or a related field. 

 

Experience (Required) 

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in backup and recovery engineering, systems administration, or cloud operations. 
  • Experience managing enterprise backup systems across cloud and on-prem environments. 
  • Experience performing restores, validating backup integrity, and troubleshooting failures. 
  • Experience with backup encryption, replication, and retention management. 
  • Experience collaborating with engineering, database, and security teams. 

 

Technical Knowledge (Required) 

  • Strong understanding of backup architectures, replication technologies, and recovery workflows. 
  • Knowledge of cloud-native backup features (AWS, Azure, or similar). 
  • Familiarity with DoD security requirements for data protection and backup handling. 
  • Understanding of file system backups, database backups, snapshots, and log-based recovery. 
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, and backup health dashboards. 

Technical Knowledge (Preferred) 

  • Experience supporting IL5 or DoD mission environments. 
  • Knowledge of disaster recovery architectures and testing practices. 
  • Experience with automation or scripting for backup workflows. 

 

Certifications 

Required: 

  • CompTIA Security+ 
  • ITIL v4 Foundation 

Preferred: 

  • Cloud provider certifications (AWS, Azure) 
  • Backup vendor certifications 

 

Skills 

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities for complex backup issues. 
  • Ability to document policies, runbooks, and technical configurations clearly. 
  • Strong coordination skills for cross-team operational planning. 
  • High attention to detail with a focus on reliability and data integrity. 
  • Ability to manage backup workloads and priorities in a fast-paced mission environment.
