Overview

DecisionPoint seeks a Senior Technical Writer/Trainer to support the development, documentation, and delivery of training materials for a Department of Defense (DoD) modernization effort enhancing Casualty and Mortuary Affairs (CMA) operations. The position ensures all program artifacts, user documentation, and instructional materials are accurate, consistent, and aligned with system updates and sustainment objectives. 

The Technical Writer/Trainer will collaborate with functional teams, developers, and mission users to produce clear, compliant, and mission-relevant materials that support system deployment, onboarding, and operational continuity across all Services. 

 

This position is fully remote.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Technical Writer/Trainer, Sr. will: 

  • Develop, update, and maintain training guides, SOPs, quick reference materials, and user manuals to support technical and non-technical audiences. 
  • Coordinate with subject matter experts (SMEs), developers, and functional leads to ensure all materials accurately reflect current system functionality and mission workflows. 
  • Create and manage learning content and courseware, including slide decks, eLearning modules, and job aids to support both initial and refresher training. 
  • Support knowledge transfer and onboarding activities for Service users and administrators during deployment and sustainment phases. 
  • Lead train-the-trainer sessions for Service component representatives, ensuring consistent delivery across user populations. 
  • Maintain a centralized repository for training and reference documentation, ensuring version control, accessibility, and traceability. 
  • Produce and edit communications and process documentation, including configuration guides, release notes, and governance documents. 
  • Collaborate with performance analysts to create dashboards, training metrics, and after-action reports that measure training impact and identify improvement opportunities. 
  • Support ongoing Continuous Service Improvement (CSI) activities by revising materials based on user feedback and operational changes. 
  • Ensure all training and documentation products meet DoD accessibility, cybersecurity, and communication standards. 

Qualifications

Clearance Requirement: 

  • Must hold an active Secret clearance. 

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, Information Systems, Education, or a related field. 

Experience: 

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in technical writing, instructional design, or training delivery for federal or defense programs. 
  • Experience supporting enterprise IT systems or military operations preferred. 

Technical Knowledge: 

  • Proficiency in authoring tools such as Adobe FrameMaker, MadCap Flare, Microsoft 365, and Articulate 360. 
  • Familiarity with DoD documentation standards, accessibility (508 compliance), and content management systems. 
  • Experience developing eLearning modules or conducting virtual and instructor-led training. 
  • Understanding of IT system development lifecycles (SDLC/Agile) and documentation control procedures. 

Certifications (Preferred): 

  • CompTIA Certified Technical Trainer (CTT+) or equivalent instructional design certification. 
  • ITIL Foundation or Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification. 
  • Technical Communication Professional (CPTC) or similar credential. 

Skills: 

  • Strong written communication, editing, and instructional design capabilities. 
  • Ability to translate complex technical information into clear, user-friendly materials. 
  • Highly organized with attention to formatting consistency, document control, and compliance. 
  • Collaborative team player able to work effectively across technical and operational domains. 
  • Comfortable conducting live and recorded training sessions for diverse user groups.
