Overview

DecisionPoint Corporation is seeking a Senior Database Architect to join our team supporting the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service’s Public Health Information System (PHIS). In this role, you will be responsible for designing, optimizing, and migrating relational databases in both on-premises and cloud environments (including Azure Gov Cloud), as PHIS evolves toward a modern, service-oriented architecture.

 

This position is fully remote.

Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Designs, maintains, enhances, codes, and migrates relational databases, queries, stored procedures, and jobs in both cloud and non-cloud environments, including migrations to cloud platforms 
  • Analyzes and determines information needs and elements, data relationships and attributes, data flow and storage requirements, and data output/reporting capabilities 
  • Develops data models and leads data acquisition, access analysis/design, and archive, recovery, and load strategy design and implementation 
  • Coordinates new data development to ensure consistency and integration with existing data structures 
  • Reviews business requests for data and data usage; researches and integrates new or improved data feeds 
  • Participates in continuous improvement efforts to enhance performance and functionality 
  • Designs data structures to support database production, storage, maintenance, and accessibility 
  • Develops user interfaces (screens) and queries; tests designed database applications 
  • Performs hardware and software upgrades and maintenance as required 
  • Provides technical support, guidance, and training to end users and development teams 
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant hardware and software applications 
  • May serve as team or technical task lead, offering problem-solving expertise and mentoring lower-level staff 
  • Participates in special projects as required 
  • Conducts technical and subject matter research on emerging technologies to assess impacts on application execution 
  • Analyzes and documents client needs and requirements 
  • Writes, modifies, and maintains technical documentation and specifications, including system documentation, entity-relationship diagrams, data models, and data dictionaries 

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Minimum 7 years of professional experience in database architecture, design, and administration. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience). 
  • Technical Skills: 
    • Expertise in SQL Server (on-prem and Azure Managed Instances), Oracle, or similar RDBMS. 
    • Proficiency with cloud database services (Microsoft Azure SQL Database/Managed Instance, Amazon RDS/Aurora). 
    • Strong skills in data modeling (logical and physical), ETL processes, and performance tuning. 
    • Experience with database migration tools and strategies (e.g., Azure Database Migration Service). 
    • Familiarity with Agile/DevOps practices, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines for database deployments. 
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication; proven ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional Agile teams; strong mentorship capabilities.
